Anak (movie)

Movie: Anak starring Vilma Santos and Claudine Barreto. This Filipino movie is about a rebellious daughter that hates her mother so much since her mother is an OFW and she is not with them during their growth. This movie is very spectacular and we can learn many lessons in this movie. It really describes the Filipino family today.

Filipino families now are so much different compared to the situation of the Filipino families before. Many Overseas Filipino Workers can relate with this movie. The movie focuses on the relationship of a parent and a child who comes across a trial which concerns misunderstanding due to communication gaps between the daughter (portrayed by Claudine Barretto) and the mother (portrayed by Vilma Santos). The moral evolves around the understanding of a child to his or her parents trying to make a living for the whole family, to have a better future of his or her children and most especially to meet their needs.

In Philippines, many have worked abroad to strengthen their livelihood and to look for success. Children must understand the hardships of their parents. One of the major reasons why Filipinos migrate abroad is because of lesser job opportunities here in Philippines.

Both have to realize these shortcomings and constant communication is a must to avoid these gaps. Filipino parents will always wish the best things for their children. Open communication is the solution. Distance is not a hindrance to a Filipino parent to show how he or she cares for his or her children.

A short clip from the movie... :)

Disclaimer: We do not own this, Star Cinema does. :D

Carabao or Water Buffalo

The animal Carabao symbolizes good work ethics compared to other nationalities. It is even our national animal.

Filipinos are known as hardworking individuals. Every one knows that, that’s why even other nationalities choose Filipino as their employer. Filipinos have long patience when it talks about WORK.

Yes, Filipinos are hardworking as evidenced by the number of OFWs worldwide. The innate ability of Filipinos to please the people whom they serve, even if that would mean personal sacrifice, is the greatest proof of this trait. The great ability of our kababayans to work with their hearts is proof of our being hardworking because we’re motivated to help our families and our nation. – Jose Nobela, Ligay City, Albay

Cellphone

Martin Cooper, thank you! Who is Martin Cooper? He is the inventor of the very useful cellphone. Admit it or not, we cannot live without cellphone. By the use of cellphone, we can communicate to our family, love ones and others. Cellphone updates us, communicates with others and entertains us (internet, camera, pictures, videos, games etc.) Cellphone has many advantages but also have disadvantages. We all know what are those.

We Filipinos are thankful for cellphones because we can communicate with other people without any hassle. We can socialize and have easy communication. Every person is just a text or call away but just make sure you have a load. By the use of cellphone, we can contact our family and ask where they are, what are they doing, what is currently happening to them, contact them in emergencies and many other things. We can also do these things with our friends.

We consider cellphone as an representation of Filipino family today because cellphone today is a must and every family member has cellphone or even cellphones. Cellphone is a mobile device that we can use for easy communication for our family. Like cellphone, our family is very important too to us and as if we cannot live without cellphone in our lives. Also, because of cellphone, we don't get bored easily. Cellphone bridges gaps.

Cellphone, it's a necessity.

Computer (with internet)

Computer with internet of course, also symbolizes Filipino family today. In this generation of technology, everyone needs an internet for easy communication with other people from all over the world. Filipino families today are very in to technology. Sometimes, they use this technology to communicate with other family member/s all over the world. Since there will always be a family member or relatives working abroad (OFWs). Since Filipinos are spread all over, we can contact them easily by the use of computer and internet. With the use of internet (Facebook, Email, Skype, YM etc.), we can see and update each other and feels like we're not far apart. Imagine, they're just a click away and we can be updated with their lives and vice versa.

We should be thankful for the computer and internet because we can communicate with other people (most especially with out family not physically with us). Computer is a tool to be closer with our love ones even though we're apart from each other.

Electric Fan

We decided to include this because in every Filipino home, there is one, just like the rice cooker. Some may have air conditioners but still they have an electric fan. It’s some sort of a staple in the Filipino home. Since we live in a tropical country, this helps us to be refreshed. right?

An electric fan cools us down and helps us stand the heat of our country. Since we are also experiencing climate change, the electric fan is a good way to reduce them, since it gives some sort of natural air unlike most air conditioners who give out CFCs.

We may have air conditioners, but there's nothing like an electric fan switched to 'number 3'. :)

"Ded na si Lolo" (movie)

This is a family-oriented film that deals with how the Filipinos cope when a family member dies. How Filipinos react. It is a tragic comedy film which is common to the Filipinos since we are more of those who enjoy drama with a little bit of laughter aside. This movie shows several superstitions in which some of us still believe. Superstitions are widely known to us since our grandmothers, grandfathers and other relatives still follow them. This really signifies the culture of Filipinos.

Directed by Soxie H. Topacio, this is a great thing to have in our time capsule and worth a two thumbs up.

Superstitions like "do not bathe when there's a burial", "do not wear red when there's a burial", "Do not let a tear drop in the coffin" and a lot more.

This truly symbolizes the Filipino family, well not all but most, because we Filipinos are superstitious, family-oriented and Filipinos can't afford to lose someone so dear to them. The movie shows several things done in a burial, like playing cards to pass the time and offering food to those who attend the burial. A true Filipino act.

Here's the official trailer of the movie: Enjoy :)

Disclaimer: We do not own this trailer, Regal Films does. :)

Family picture

It symbolizes that Filipinos are family-orientated, sentimental and treasures their family so much compared to other foreign family.
Filipino people are sentimental. They treasure a lot of happy memories with their love ones, as well as sharing these memories to others. Filipinos love to reminisce those past memories. Also, they want to let the world see the beauty of the Filipino people.

Filipinos are fun-loving and love to share stories and experiences with others. It is part of our culture to share what we learn or experience when we travel or in simple daily encounters.

Nowadays, blogging is common to Filipinos. A lot of people blog for different reasons, but usually, it's simply to share, to update friends and others of what is happening with you. It is part of the pinoy culture to be "ma-kwento" (full of stories) and blogging is just a new and fun way of doing this. Reminiscing and being connected to others and keeping in touch with friends and family are Filipino traits.

Iingatan ka by Carol Banawa (song)

Sa buhay kong ito
Tanging pangarap lang
Ang iyong pag mamahal
Ay ma kamtam
Kahit na sandali
Ikaw ay mamasdan
Ligaya tila ay
Walang hangan
Sana ay di na magising
Kung nangangarap man din
Kung ang buhay na makulay
Ang tatahakin
Minsan ay nadarama
minsan di na iluluha
Di ka na maninilbi
pagkat sa buhay mo
ay may nag mamahal parin

Iingatan ka
Aalagaan ka
Sa puso ko ikaw ang pag-asa
Sa 'ting mundo'y
may gagabay sa iyo
Ang alay ko'y itong pagmamahal ko
May nag mamahal aakay sa iyo
Aking inay ikaw ang nagbigay
Ng Buhay ko
Buhay na kay ganda
Pangarap ko na makamtan ko na

Sana'y di na magising
Kung nangangarap man din
Kung ang buhay na makulay
Ang tatahakin
Minsan ay nadarama
minsan di na iluluha
Di ka na maninilbi
pagkat sa buhay mo
ay may nag mamahal parin

Iingatan ka
Aalagaan ka
Sa puso ko ikaw ang pag-asa
Sa 'ting mundo'y
May gagabay sa iyo
Ang alay ko'y itong pagmamahal ko
May nagmamahal aakay sa iyo
Aking inay ikaw ang nagbigay
Ng Buhay ko
Buhay na kay ganda
Pangarap ko na makamtan ko na (2x)

Listen to the song! The song's lyrics explains everything. It tells that even though life's hard, there is at least one person in our lives that will be with us all along in these trials/hard times. That person will forever accepts and loves us no matter what we are doing in our lives. We need to treasure and take care of that person because that person will give us hope in this crazy world. Who is that person I'm referring to? It's none other than our mother, our mom. She will non-stop loves and guides us. And she is the reason why we are in this beautiful mad world. So that's why we should be very thankful to her.

This song is very touching because we are giving thanks to our love one, our mom. It also applies to our family (as a whole and/or other family members) because they are always beside us, guiding us. Our family will always support us because they are our family, simple as that. So we should really take care and value our family because in the end, we still go back to our origin, our family.

We hope we all can see the efforts our family is doing to us even though we take them for granted.

Malls

Malls symbolizes Filipino family today because we often bond with our families in the malls. Since our country, the Philippines is very hot, we want to chill and just hang-out inside the malls since it's cold and it's not boring plus the electricity is free. We can do many other things with our family in malls like eating and shopping. Without these malls, life will be boring. Imagine, what will do in our house? Other than eat, internet and sleep? Malls are the bonding place of families because malls are everywhere. Malls are accessible and gives our needs. That is the reason why malls are always jump packed. We often see families in malls bonding especially when it's Sunday.

Money

Money, money, money. Admit it or not, money also symbolizes the Filipino family today. Why? It is for the reason that we work very hard (some even go abroad) to just earn money. We work to have money so that we can live. We give money to our family so that we can afford to buy our basic and other needs. But the problem is we are so busy to earn money. Sometimes we forget that we still have family and we just do work and blinded by it.

In this generation, money is very important. Even person needs money to survive the demands of the world. Money is the root cause of everything. What are those? think, think.

Passport

Today, a lot of Filipinos/Filipinas marry other nationalities to escape poverty and migrate abroad.

Why do some Filipinos marry foreigners? Honestly speaking, because of the future that foreigners could give. The chance of migrating abroad is such a big blessing to Filipinos. Especially now that the poverty level in Philippines is getting higher and higher, Filipinos are so smart when it comes to these things. They are “madiskarte”. But of course one exception you cannot deny is the fact that these people (a Filipino and a foreigner) are so much in love with each other.

Roaming Sim card

Before I discuss this, It would be our pleasure to show you this clip that we got from YouTube.
:)

Disclaimer: We do not own this commercial, Globe does. :)

So basically, this is a commercial by Globe about how technology bridges the huge gap between our family working overseas to us here in the Philippines.

In the commercial, the mother stated: “Saan man sa mundo, gusto ko laging maabot ang mga mahal ko”. We should be thankful for technology for making this communication possible. Because of Roaming Sim Cards we can talk to our Family members who are out of the country with not much too pay. Again, This shows the how we want our family ties to be tight. This also shows how family-oriented the Filipinos are. If you see the reaction of the family when they are talking to their father who works overseas, they are really happy and excited they are. They love and miss their father so much. Even the voice of their father is like music to their ears. That is definitely a Filipino.

Roaming Sim Cards symbolizes how we really want to be with our family as much as possible. It's a great thing to make us happy, overwhelmed, fulfilled and even contented. Knowing a family member is okay is one of the things that Filipinos would love to know.

The Bible

We are very religious people. A Filipino may not be Christian but we describe this bible as a book in which your religion believes. May it be a quoran or some other things; we just gave “the bible” to be specific since we live in a catholic country because most of us Filipinos are catholic. We hold on to God no matter what happens. We seek him for advice; we go to church every Sunday with our family to attend the mass. We are deeply rooted in faith and we believe God like no other. Every Filipino family has this in their homes. That is how truly religious we are.
